Job Description

GENERAL SUMMARY: The Merchandise Planner develops the appropriate margin, inventory, assortment, financial plans and forecasts for the merchandise department. Ongoing responsibilities to maintain accurate sales, margin and inventory forecasts to ensure the Open to Buy reflect the proper purchase opportunities. Responsible for coordinating the assortment planning components which will optimize the purchase and distribution of product for both Brick and Mortar and Direct Channel.

Planning and Inventory Management

  • Hindsight
    • Perform seasonal recap of past seasons performance by style, class, sub department and department across all grades and lifestyles and make recommendations for improvements for next season
  • Pre Season
    • Collaborate with buyers to develop and communicate a comprehensive strategy that aligns financial and product opportunities by department, class and by selected key items
    • Reconcile bottom up and top down plans to ensure appropriate stock levels are planned appropriately by category.
    • In partnership with buyer, develop and execute an assortment plan which specifies the number of customer choices appropriate for different store grades, as well as for the direct channel, and the correct depth for each choice.
  • In Season
    • Identify and communicate risks and opportunities to insure overall financial goals are achieved.
    • Recap and analyze actual sales results against plan and last approved forecast to ensure forecast is accurate
    • Identify and manage markdowns to align with targeted out dates and gross margin objectives
    • Take appropriate actions to manage and control inventories to forecast and plan. Identify opportunities to cancel, purchase or expedite merchandise to hit targeted inventory levels
    • Develop accurate pre-season unit projections for replenishment product, not on the E3 system, work with allocation to develop supporting model inventory appropriate by item.
    • Analyze playbook reports to monitor sales trends and inventory levels and make suggestions for purchases or methods to reduce inventory as needed.


  • Highlight opportunities and risks associated with current financial position to appropriate levels of management, particularly during Forecast meetings, Buy Reviews and Style Outs
  • Provide the formal and informal training mentoring to assist in the development of Associate Planner
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with cross-functional partners- merchants, visual, product development, replenishment and allocation.
  • Collaborate with peers to ensure consistency of information, share best practices and develop systems knowledge.


  • 5+ years specialty retail planning experience
  • Bachelors degree required
  • Experience in top down and bottom up planning processes and maximizing all financial metrics
  • Team player that is capable of contributing to the total organization on a multi-faceted level


  • Strong understanding of merchandise/retail accounting
  • Strong orientation to bottom line results through practical merchandise experience
  • Strong analytical, organizational and communication skills and must be able to clearly present and support business strategies
  • Strong PC skills including Excel, Word, and centralized merchandise systems computer skills.
  • Knowledge of JDAPlanning and/or other merchandise planning systems is a plus.
